EU strongly condemns Israeli strike on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon
EU, in its latest statement, expressed “particularly grave concern regarding the attacks” by the Israeli military against the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which wounded several peacekeepers.

“Such attacks against UN peacekeepers constitute a grave violation of international law and are totally unacceptable,” a statement said.

It reiterated the fundamental role of the body in the stability of south Lebanon calling for a thorough investigation into the attack against UNIFIL.

The EU also expressed concern over Israeli raids on densely populated areas of Lebanon, “causing a heavy toll on civilians and the displacement of many”.

The UNIFIL peacekeeping force said two Israeli Merkava tanks destroyed the main gate of a base and forcibly entered before dawn on Sunday.

Soon after the tanks left, shells exploded 100 metres (328 feet) away, releasing smoke that blew across the base and sickened UN personnel, causing 15 to require treatment despite wearing gas masks, UNIFIL said. It did not say who fired the shells or what sort of toxic substance it suspected.

This comes as the latest in a series of violations and attacks by Israeli forces on UNIFIL as the regime forces expand bombardment and ground attacks on Lebanon.
