Malaysian council demands release of pro-Palestine activist in US

The Malaysian Consultative Council for Islamic Organization (MAPIM) has condemned in strongest terms the arrest of a pro-Palestine activist by US immigration authorities and also Washington’s weaponizing immigration laws to silence the dissent.

The statement by the president of MAPIM, Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid, comes following the arrest of a postgraduate student, Mahmoud Khalil, at the order of the US department of State over his pro-Palestine activism, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).

Azmi Abdul Hamid said the move “reflects a growing trend of intimidation, repression, and political persecution against those who stand for justice and human rights in Palestine.”

He added,” Mahmoud Khalil’s arrest is a clear example of how institutions and governments are weaponizing immigration laws to
silence the dissent and suppress voices of resistance against Israeli apartheid and war crimes.”

According to the Malaysian scholar the severe disciplinary actions against peaceful student protests reflects the hypocrisy of Columbia University in claiming to uphold free speech and academic freedom.

MAPIM president demanded immediate release of Mahmoud Khalil and reinstating of all students affected due to their pro-Palestine activism.

Azmi Abdul Hamid also called on the international community to speak out against the blatant targeting of activists who support Palestinian human rights.

Mahmoud Khalil was detained by US immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on 8 March and is reportedly facing deportation.

His arrest has sparked outrage among activists and legal advocates, who argue that his detention raises concerns over political repression and freedom of speech.
