On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in response to a request for help by the heads of the Donbas republics. He stressed that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories, but aimed to demilitarize and denazify the country.

According to the US Treasury Department, these individuals include Russian officials, members of the Duma, a number of businessmen and their families.

Foreign Minister Lavrov has informed Secretary Blinken that the "propaganda campaign" about "Russian aggression" against Ukraine has provocative purposes, and reiterated Russia's security concerns about NATO's plans to expand further east, the Russian Foreign Ministry has indicated in a readout of Saturday's talks.

The United States is mulling a CIA-researched package of additional sanctions against Russia in the event of an escalation over Ukraine, Bild reports.
