‘Iran, Venezuela oppose use of force’

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has condemned the United States for declaring Venezuela a threat to its national security, saying Tehran and Caracas have adopted similar policies in countering threats and use of force.

“Regarding Venezuela’s [non-permanent] membership in the UN Security Council (UNSC) and the pressing challenges facing the region, Tehran and Caracas have [adopted] common policies in opposing [the use of] force and bullying approaches,” Zarif said in a joint press conference with his Venezuelan counterpart Delcy Rodriguez in Tehran on Monday.

Earlier in March, US President Barack Obama signed an order to impose new sanctions on Venezuela, labeling the country an “extraordinary threat to national security.”

The Iranian foreign minister said that Venezuelan people like the Iranian nation have stood up to foreign threats.

Also underlining the necessity of coordination between Tehran and Caracas on oil policies, Zarif said that he and his Venezuelan counterpart had held discussion in that respect.

Zarif also noted that cooperation between Iran, Venezuela and other members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is an important factor for the stability of the oil market. Both Iran and Venezuela are OPEC member states.

Rodriguez, for her part, called for the further enhancement of bilateral relations between Iran and Venezuela, hoping that Tehran-Caracas cooperation would serve the interests of both countries.
