Karbala symbolizes struggle for justice, truth and standing against tyranny
A UK-based commentator on Muslim world issues stressed that the uprising and martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam and grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) goes beyond a mere historical event and symbolizes the struggle for justice, truth and standing against tyranny.

Fahima Mahomed, a life coach and NLP practitioner based in the UK, in an interview with the Press TV, said Karbala holds significant historical and spiritual importance for millions of Muslims.
Mahomed, who was raised and brought up as a Sunni Muslim in South Africa before she moved to London and embraced Shia Islam, said she has been greatly influenced by the events of Karbala.
“Imam Hussain's (AS) uprising in Karbala is considered a paradigm of resistance against oppression and a powerful representation of the eternal battle between right and wrong,” she told Press TV website.
“His unwavering commitment to principles and refusal to compromise on his beliefs, even at the cost of his life, has inspired countless people across religious lines.”
Friday marks the Ashura, which means the 10th of Muharram when Imam Hussain (AS) and the male members of this family and associates were martyred in the desert plains of Karbala in 680 CE (61 AH).
His brave and unyielding stand against the corrupt and despotic Umayyad rule has for centuries inspired the campaigners of truth and justice everywhere.
Mahomed, who regularly appears on TV channels and portals in the UK to discuss Muslim issues, said the appeal of Karbala extends beyond Islam, “resonating with individuals from various faiths who admire the spirit of self-sacrifice, moral courage, and the pursuit of justice exemplified by Imam Hussain (AS).”
“Many see the events of Karbala as a universal message, emphasizing the importance of standing up for truth, even in the face of overwhelming adversity,” she told the Press TV website.
The UK-based commentator said the popular saying “Every day is Ashura and every place is Karbala’ suggests that lessons and values derived from the events at Karbala are “timeless and relevant in all times and places.”
“It reminds believers that the struggle for justice, truth, and righteousness is not confined to a specific time or location but should be a continuous and universal pursuit in their lives,” she noted.
Mahomed further cited Imam Hussain’s (AS) oft-quoted saying that "death with dignity is better than a life of humiliation” as something that resonated with many, cutting across religious and ideological lines.
“This quote reflects Imam Hussain's (AS) unwavering commitment to principles and willingness to sacrifice his life rather than submit to tyranny. It serves as a reminder to always uphold one's values and integrity, even in the face of challenges or adversity,” she remarked.
