Iran annual fishery exports projected to reach $350 million: official

Iran’s Fisheries Organization Director Gholam Reza Razeqi says the Islamic Republic plans to export $350 million worth of fishery products in the current Iranian calendar year (started March 21, 2013).

He added that European countries, including Spain, France, Germany and Italy, are the main customers of Iranian sturgeons and shrimps, while Iraq is the major consumer of Iranian warm-water fish species.

Razeqi further noted that Russia and Ukraine have been identified as new markets in the region, and plans are underway to export Iranian fishery products to them.

He said that 14,984 tons of fishery products, valued at $58.5 million, were exported in spring 2013. The figure showed a 21-percent growth in weight and eight percent in value compared to spring 2012.

More than 200,000 individuals are said to be working in the Iranian fishery sector.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Iran ranks 33th in the world in terms of fishery output.
