Pompeo grilled over Trump administration’s anti-Iran policy

Congress members on Friday attacked Pompeo over the January 3 assassination of top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, saying the attack has made America less safe.

Pompeo was testifying before the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Democrats shared their "tremendous frustration" regarding the lack of "adequate time" that Pompeo spent answering their questions at a hearing on Iran.

Lawmakers also lambasted the Trump administration for not seeking authorization from Congress before launching the assassination. They described the operation as reckless and impulsive.

Many of the House members questioned claims made by President Donald about imminent threats posed by General Soleimani against American lives and interests.

Congress members then attacked Pompeo and Trump for what they called trivializing injuries sustained by American forces in the wake of Iran’s retaliatory missile strike on an Iraqi base.

Pompeo also fielded questions about the impact of US sanctions against Iran as the country is fighting the outbreak of the new coronavirus.

The US secretary of state claimed that the delivery of humanitarian goods and medicine has never been under sanctions.

This is while none of the foreign banks are ready to carry out operations with regard to Iran, fearing they may be punished by Washington.

They United States has launched a so-called maximum pressure campaign against Iran in the past few years after pulling out of the 2015 nuclear deal which was applauded by the international community.

The US killed General Soleimani near Baghdad international Airport in an operation which was condemned by the United Nations.
