Israel using water as a weapon in Gaza, authorities say

The Water Authority in Gaza announced today that the quantities of water purchased from the Israeli company Mekorot for the Strip reached 13.8 million cubic metres during 2024, at a financial cost exceeding 54 million shekels ($14.8 million).

It confirmed that it is working to ensure the distribution of these quantities to the northern, central and southern regions, to provide potable water for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip according to the available amounts. This is alongside its efforts to repair, maintain and rehabilitate water lines, reservoirs and desalination stations, as well as to provide the necessary fuel to operate them in areas where technical crews can access and work to ensure the pumping of water supplies.
Before October 2023, the water supply to Gaza was already insufficient for the needs of its 2.3 million population.
Since the genocidal bombing campaign began, the United Nations estimates that the average Gazan is living on only three litres of water per day for all needs – well below its emergency standard of 15 litres.
Israel has destroyed over 700 wells and water desalination plants, which has significantly reduced the amount of water available in Gaza. The occupation state has also forced all five of Gaza’s wastewater treatment plants and most of its 65 sewage pumping stations to shut down as a result of the lack of fuel and electricity to run the services.
