The Arab Republic of Egypt, in coordination with the State of Palestine, had submitted the draft resolution on behalf of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The resolution received strong approval by the majority of the UN member states, including the countries of the European Union, Latin America, Asia and Africa.
The decision is scheduled to be submitted for approval by the General Assembly in mid-December.
The resolution affirms the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and freedom, as guaranteed by all international laws, and considers this right a prerequisite for achieving a just and comprehensive solution to the Question of Palestine.
This vote comes days after the UNGA Fourth Committee adopted a resolution requesting an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice defining the legal consequences of Israel's violation of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.
Ambassador Riyad Mansour, the Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, commended the resolution, saying it is evidence of the world's continued support for the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.
He expressed Palestine's deepest thanks to all countries that voted in favor of the resolution.
