Al-Azhar launches campaign against desecration of Qur’an

The University of Al-Azhar has launched a campaign to raise awareness on the Qur’an in defense of the holy book of Islam following the recent desecration in Sweden.

Under the campaign program, preachers will shed light on practical lessons from the Quran, which calls for social reform, and promoting peace and tranquility among all people, using simple language that is easy to be understood by everyone.

Dubbed “Surely We will guard it”, the campaign aims to defend the Holy Book against any attempt to desecrate Qur’an, in the wake of the recent Qur’an burning in Stockholm.

In a press release, Secretary General of the Islamic Center Nazir Ayyad said the campaign has been launched in response to a racist campaign targeting Islamic sanctities that provoked the feelings of millions of Muslims around the world.

He warned that such abuses may fuel racism and extremism against religions and spark hate speech among followers of different faiths.

The initiation by prestigious Egyptian university comes after the recent event where an Iraqi refugee in Sweden tore pages from Qur’an and burned the holy book outside the central mosque in Stockholm, drawing widespread condemnations from across the Muslim world.
