Hujjat-ul-Islam Hamid Shahriari, in an interview with local television channel in Urmia related on the objectives behind regional Islamic unity conferences stressing establishment of the new Islamic civilization as an aim behind such meetings, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).

He referred to the annual Islamic Unity Conference held concurrent with the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and the limited capacity of the meeting to admit prominent scholars from Iran and other Islamic countries.

He said the regional Islamic unity conferences provide us with better opportunities to discuss the Muslim world issues with the Shia and Sunni clerics from different cities.

He noted that the 3rd Regional Islamic Unity Conference has invited 800 renowned Shia and Sunni scholars from Urmia which is not possible during the annual Islamic Unity Conference.

Secretary General of World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought also explained his views on the impacts of the Islamic unity on formation of the new Islamic civilization and said,” In my view the new Islamic civilization has the capacity to be reformed but this is impossible without cooperation and convergence of the other Islamic countries.”

The cleric stressed that the new Islamic civilization is not achieved without contributions by both Shia and Sunni scholars and that they should join hands for establishment of a union of Islamic countries first.

He also referred to a conceptual model of the unified Islamic nation proposed at the meeting and also the proposals for expansion of economic, cultural and social interactions between the Muslim countries.

Hujjat-ul-Islam Shahriari hailed the coexistence of different Islamic denominations and also different Abrahamic religions in Urmia and said the city can set an example of coexistence for the entire world of Islam.

Top cleric made the comments ahead of the 3rd Regional Islamic Unity Conference in the city of Urmia, West Azerbaijan province.
