Muslims clad in black as a sign of mourning beat their chests, perform group mourning ceremonies and pray on the day which is a landmark in history of the Shia Islam.
Also millions of mourners flock to the holy city of Karbala where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located.
Imam Hussein and 72 of his family members and closest companions were brutally martyred on this day back in 680 A.D. in the Battle of Karbala fighting the tyrant ruler of the time, Yazid ibn Muawiya.
In different cities across Iran people gather in mosques, Husseiniya or congregation sites for mourning ceremonies.
Muslims begin the mourning ceremonies on first of Muharram with the peak of the ceremonies on ninth and tenth when Hazrat Abbas and Imam Hussein were martyred.
Some non-Muslims, loyal to the third Shia Imam, also attend the ceremonies to mark the great sacrifice made by Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.
