The injured pilgrims are receiving medical treatment in three hospitals in Abarkuh, Taft and the provincial center of Yazd, 14 of them in critical condition, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).

The preliminary investigation reveals that the accident was caused by high speed and technical defect, the commander of traffic police in Yazd said.

The bus was on its way to the border terminal of Chazabeh in western Iran heading for the Arbaeen procession in the Iraqi holy city of Karbala.

Thousands of Arbaeen pilgrims from Iran’s neighboring countries travel to Iraq via Iran.

Arbaeen marks the 40th day after martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam and grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) who was martyred, along with his closest companions and family members in the Battle of Karbala in 680 A.D. fighting the tyrant ruler of his time Yazid ibn Muawiyah.
