The students condemned Israeli genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza Strip that also took lives of the former graduate al-Areer together with several members of his family in Gaza, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).

Rafaat al-Areer co-founded the organization We Are Not Numbers, which matched experienced authors with young writers in Gaza, and promoted the power of storytelling as a means of Palestinian resistance against the Israeli occupation.

The protesters also denounced the university officials for financial support, as part of the British government’s support, for the ongoing Israeli massacre of Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.

A professor of creative writing at the University of Gaza, Alareer, along with his brother, sister, and four of his nephews, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on northern Gaza. His death came on December 6 only two months after the Israeli regime unleashed its genocidal war on the besieged Gaza Strip.

The European monitoring group Euro-Med released a statement, following the death of al-Areer, saying that he was deliberately targeted, "surgically bombed out of the entire building".

It added the strike on al-Areer’s residence came after weeks of "death threats that Refaat received online and by phone from Israeli accounts.”

Israeli regime has killed more than 44,600 people and injured nearly 106,000 others since the beginning of its killing campaign in Gaza on October 7.
