UN Expert Criticizes U.S., Germany for Supplying Majority of Israeli Weapons

In a revealing interview, Ben Saul, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Counter-Terrorism, stated that the United States and Germany collectively provide 99% of Israel’s military arsenal, raising serious questions about their compliance with international humanitarian law.

"Under international law, every country has an obligation to ensure that the weapons it supplies are not used to violate humanitarian law," Saul asserted. He further noted that the extensive support from the U.S. and Germany plays a significant role in sustaining what he described as Israel’s "war machine."

Saul criticized these nations, stating they have "misinterpreted and failed to uphold their international obligations." He suggested that legal actions against them could be pursued both domestically and internationally.
Highlighting the well-documented nature of Israel’s alleged war crimes, the UN official stressed that many of the weapons supplied by the U.S. and Germany have been used in these actions. He added that these countries hold substantial influence over preventing human rights violations by Israel and could support the international community’s calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
"The situation in Gaza remains catastrophic," Saul warned, describing the ongoing crisis as "unprecedented in terms of the scale of violence and destruction over a short period."
The remarks bring renewed scrutiny to arms export policies and the accountability of countries involved in conflicts that violate international law.
