World Mosque Day was established by Ayatollah Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Revolution, on the anniversary of the arson attack on Al-Aqsa Mosque by Denis Michael Rohan, an Australian Christian Zionist, on August 21, 1969.

At the foreign ministers’ meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation held in the capital Tehran, Iran’s Foreign Minister proposed that the anniversary of arson attack on al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli regime on August 31st be marked as World Mosque Day.
