In a unanimous statement on Friday, the security council described the decapitation scene of Foley as a “heinous and cowardly” show of brutality by ISIL.

“It once again demonstrates the brutality of ISIL, which is responsible for thousands of abuses against the Syrian and Iraqi people,” the council said.

The 15 member security council said ISIL must be defeated and the terrorists of the group brought to justice.

“The members of the security council stressed that ISIL must be defeated and that the intolerance, violence and hatred it espouses must be stamped out,” it said.

The council also called for “a common effort amongst governments and institutions” to confront “ISIL, al-Nusra Front and all other individuals, group, undertakings and entities associated with al-Qaeda.”

The council urged the immediate release of all hostages captured by the terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

On Wednesday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the murder, describing it as an awful crime.

The White House has called the execution of Foley a terrorist attack on the United States.

A footage, which surfaced on the Internet on August 19, showed a suspected British terrorist beheading Foley in what is said to be retaliation for US airstrikes against ISIL in Iraq.

The US military has attacked the ISIL militants inside Iraq after earlier this month President Barack Obama authorized aerial attacks against ISIL targets in the country.

The ISIL terrorists currently control parts of eastern Syria and Iraq’s northern and western regions, where they have been committing heinous crimes in the captured areas.
