Shias and those loyal to the third Shia Imam paid tribute to the third Shia Imam on the Day of Ashura commemorating the sacrifice he made to fight the tyrant ruler of his time Yazid ibn Muawiyah in the Battle of Karbala back in 680 AD.
Shia Muslims mark the first ten days of Muharram commemorating the martyrdom anniversary of Hazrat Abbas (AS), half-brother and closest companion of Imam Hussein (AS) who was martyred on the ninth day and the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) on the tenth day which is also known as the Day of Ashura.
The historical landmark is globally marked by Muslims and non-Muslims loyal to the household of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) due to the great sacrifice he made to fight tyranny and revive pure Islam brought by the Prophet of Islam.
People in Iran particularly mark the Day of Ashura with mourning ceremonies, chest beating, prayer, distributing charity food and attending Ta’ziyeh (passion play showing the Battle of Karbala.)
The ceremonies have been restricted due to the pandemic infection during the past two years. The ceremonies are held observing the health protocols against COVID-19.
