Hundreds of people have attended the Friday prayer held in front of the Red Crescent center in the Gaza Strip to voice solidarity with Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

They came to drum up support for Palestinian prisoners who kicked off a series of protests last Monday against persistent mistreatment inside regime jails. The event is part of the Friday of Rage in solidarity with Palestinian detainees.

During the Friday sermon Hamas movement warned the Israeli regime against harming Palestinian prisoners. Over the past four days, Palestinian detainees held in 24 Israeli prisons have refused to take part in security checks and returned their meals.

They also organized sit-ins, in prison yards as part of their protest action. In recent weeks the Israeli Prison Service increased its oppressive measures against Palestinian prisoners by imposing double isolation on some detainees.

Observers say the Palestinian prisoners have become propaganda material for candidates in Israel’s elections. Currently there are some five thousand Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons, and that figure includes women and children.

According to prisoners’ advocacy groups the Israeli regime has detained more than one million Palestinians since the Nakba in 1948 under the watchful eye of the international community.
