Online activists reported the arrest of Salman Dawood al-Sabawi in the kingdom via X, formerly called Twitter.
Their posts featured pictures of Sabawi holding a banner at the courtyard of the Masjid al-Haram – Islam’s holiest site, reading “I dedicate his Umrah Hajj to martyred Ismail Haniyeh” in Arabic.

Many social media users took to X, Facebook, and other social media platforms as soon as the news about the detention of Sabawi – a resident of the southern Iraqi city of Mosul – broke, demanding his immediate and unconditional release.

Haniyeh, who was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new president Masoud Pezeshkian, alongside other Axis of Resistance leaders, was martyred along with his bodyguard, in an attack early on July 31.
