According to eyewitnesses, dozens of colonists entered the holy site in groups, conducted provocative tours throughout the compound, and performed Talmudic rituals.
The incursion happened under police protection for the settlers while the Palestinian worshippers were banned from entering the mosque.
Additionally, Israeli police intensified the restrictions at the gates of the Old City, effectively turning the area into a military zone.
Israeli settlers have frequently raided the al-Aqsa mosque despite an international law that bans non-Muslims from praying or displaying religious symbols at the Islamic site.
A recent similar storming of al-Aqsa Mosque by two far-right Israeli ministers triggered rage among Muslims and the international organizations.
