Over 5m non-Iranian pilgrims visit Imam Reza shrine annually

An official at the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS), the eighth Shia Imam and grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) says more than five million non-Iranian pilgrims visit the holy site in Mashhad annually.

Hujjat-ul-Islam Sayyed Mohammad Zolfaghari, the Deputy Office for Non-Iranian Pilgrims’ Affairs of Astan Quds Razavi called the shrine of Imam Reza as a peaceful haven for Shia Muslims worldwide.

He said,” Every year, many pilgrims from different countries come individually or in pilgrimage caravans to visit the shrine” and added that 65 percent of these pilgrims are Arabic-speakers from countries from the Persian Gulf Arab states and West Asia.

According to the cleric 25 percent are Urdu-speaking pilgrims from India and Pakistan, and 10 percent are Azeri-speaking pilgrims from other countries.

The Deputy Office is responsible for welcoming and hosting these pilgrims.

The Office for Non-Iranian Pilgrims’ Affairs of Astan Quds Razavi is in charge of welcoming the non-Iranian pilgrims, holding rituals such as congregational prayers, group visitation (Ziyarat), supplication programs, holding tours at the shrine including a visit to the museums belonging to the holy site.
