UNOCHA shared in a report on developments in the humanitarian situation in Sudan that, given the continued fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since last April, around 5.3 million people have fled their homes within Sudan or neighboring countries.
The ministry's spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said that thanks to Egypt's efforts to facilitate the crossing of refugees from Sudan, 14,000 Sudanese citizens and 2,000 nationals of 50 other countries entered Egypt as of Thursday.
Since October 2021, the people have been on the streets following the military coup in Sudan. Despite the violent crackdown on protesters by the army, they are resisting and taking to the streets until their demands are met.
While Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, chairman of Sudan's governing council, has announced that the military is committed to holding elections in mid-2023, the Sudanese people are urging an immediate end to the military presence in power to form a democratic government.
